Bronallt Gem tops Skipton dogs at 10,000gns
A top call of 10,000gns led Skipton's summer sale of working sheepdogs, with strong bidding pushing field averages up on previous sales.
Sale leader was September 2022-born black and white bitch Bronallt Gem, from Barbara Meek Maesteg, Bridgend. By Carmarthenshire-based Gerald Lewis's Dan, out of Fly, from Swansea's Mike Edwards, Gem was acquired late last year and sold with a service to Brecon-based Kevin Evans' Valley View Dan. It was knocked down to John Atkinson, Whiterose Sheepdogs, Escrick, York.
Next best at 8,200gns was a two-year-old black and white bitch, Cadi, from Beverley Fort, Steeton. By Talybont-based Dewi Jenkins' 2016-born Clwyd Bob and out of E.L. Morgan's Lil, the buyer was Harold Owen, Nantwich.
At 5,800gns was November 2022-born tri-coloured dog, Marchup Max, from Shaun Richards, Pen-y-Borough Sheep Dogs, Eldroth. This one by Robert Fielden's Tom, Todmorden, out of Silsden breeder Andrew Throup's, Kerry, gave Mr Richards his best return to date as well as the day's top-priced dog. It sold to John Yates, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
Robin Bell, Hawick, sold his September 2022-born bitch Pearl at 5,200gns. Of his own breeding and by Will Torrens' Ged, it sold to Frank Hickson, Jedbergh.
Two dogs sold for 5,100gns. The first at this price was Keighley handler Roy Canning with his 12-month-old black, white and mottled bitch, Midge. This one is home-bred by Rock, out of High Ash Jet.
At the same price was Mavis, a November 2022-born black and white bitch from Gavin Fearon, Keswick. This daughter of Netherlands-based Serge Van Der Sweep's Gary, out of J.D. Wood's Polly, sold to M. and G. German, Middleton-in-Lonsdale.
Richard Crowe, Isle of Man, sold his 17-month-old black and white bitch, Dolly, for 4,900gns. By Hendre Taff, from Barnard Castle's Rob Hutchinson, out of the breeder's own Lethans Judy, it sold to Shaun Procter, Great Musgrave, Kirkby Stephen.
Averages: Broken: registered dogs, £3,955; registered bitches, £4,655; unregistered dogs, £1,838; part-broken registered dogs, £1,145.

Mullinvale rams top at 30,000gns
Bidding topped at 30,000gns at the online Mullinvale Megastars timed sale of pedigree Suffolk rams, held on behalf of Darragh McMenamin, Killygordon, Lifford.

Leading the trade was ram lamb Mullinvale Dazzler. Having stood male and overall reserve champion at the All Ireland championships in Athenry, this one by the 40,000gns Frongoy Flamboyant, and out of a Glenroe ewe by Limestone Red Rum, sold to Charlie and Tom Boden, Cheshire.
Other leading prices included 7,200gns, paid by B. Stevenson, Meath, with J. Screene, Ballinasloe, paying 3,000gns and 2,900gns for two lots respectively.
Averages: 10 ram lambs, £5,271.

Thirsk cull cow trade flying
At Thirsk ÍæÅ¼½ã½ã Auction Mart's weekly sale of cull cows, trade topped at what is thought to be a record 442p/kg or £3,876 for a 53-month-old British Blue cow weighing 878kg from Liam Rodney, Masham.
Another five-year-old British Blue cow from the same home also sold for 440p/kg or £3,828 at 871kg. Both were purchased by John Worsley Butchers, Liversedge.
Trade resulted in a wholesale average of 283p/kg or £1,901 for a mixed show. The best heavy, fed cows traded between £2,200 and £2,400 while all smart, suckler bred cows traded at more than £3 per kilo.

Averages strong at Skipton breeding sheep opener
Skipton's opening sale of early breeding sheep saw 153 predominantly gimmer shearlings making up the entry, which sold to an average of £228.
Shearlings saw a top price of £248 on two occasions, firstly from Dakin Partnership, Hellifield, for a pen of Suffolk crosses and secondly from P. and S. Lofthouse, Grewelthorpe, for their pen of first cross Texels. All Continental shearlings sold for more than £220.
Three and four crop Suffolk cross ewes from Adam Staveley, Cowling, sold to £212 and £210 while a pen of 14 Mule shearlings sold to £232 from R. Pinder, Kelbrook, with other mules selling £222 from Robert Falshaw, Gisburn. All others made in excess of £200.

Lazonby store lamb opener
At Lazonby's store lamb opener, a pen of 12 Texels from Willie and Connon Lee, Lintley, led the trade at £152/head, with the sale averaging £108.51. The same home also sold 21 Texels to £148 and £147 selling 44 in total to average £148.84.
Andrew Stainton, Middle Farm, sold a single Texel lamb to £148 and nine to £133.
A total of 18 lots sold for £120/head or more.
Robert Pickthall, Kirkoswald, Penrith, sold 19 Suffolks to £128 and £119.
Mule lambs topped at £117 for a pen of 25 from Phillip Dawson, the Lodge.
Val and Robert Edmonson sold 17 to £114. Messrs Thompson, Howburn, sold 28 early-born Mules to £97.50.

Greenmoorside dispersal tops at 3,100gns
The dispersal of the Greenmoorside Holstein Friesian and Jersey herd on behalf of Liz Sherwen, Carlisle, saw trade peak at 3,100gns with the overall average for milkers coming to £2,072.
The sale leader was a heifer in milk by Denovo Generate. Having calved in July, it was bought by Messrs Robinson, Stranraer.
At 3,000gns and topping the Jerseys on offer was a May-calved heifer in milk which went home with Messrs Bland, Penrith.
Milking cows topped at 3,100gns for another Generate daughter, also bought by Messrs Robinson, with in-calf heifers selling to 2,300gns for a Generate daughter due in October to Bomaz Eston Sexed. The buyer was Messrs Connolly, Stranraer.
Bulling heifers sold to 1,700gns for a December-born Goonhilly Cornelly daughter, which sold to Messrs Faulder, Cockermouth, with heifers peaking at 1,550gns for an August-born Goonhilly Cornelly daughter which went home with Messrs Nicholson, Dumfries.
Averages: 88 Holstein and Jersey cows in milk/dry, £2,024.87; 29 Holstein and Jersey Heifers in milk, £2,342.58; 12 faulted cows, £1,327; 23 Holstein and Jersey in-calf heifers, £1,917.20; 39 Holstein and Jersey bulling heifers, £1,359.62; 47 Holstein and Jersey heifer calves, £777.45.

Jacobs realise 1,300gns at Worcester
The Jacob Sheep Society's annual show and sale at Worcester saw a top bid of 1,300gns, with a near 100 per cent clearance recorded.
Sale leader was Wharf Underwood, a shearling ram from Ryan Edwards, Shropshire, which sold to Kerry Gaden, Clovelly, Devon.
Next at 1,000gns was the reserve overall and reserve male champion, Beilliau Captain, from Lyndon Trumper and family, Monmouthshire, which sold to Newtoncroft Farms, Leicester, with Salopearl Tedrick, a third prize winner from Tom Lewis, Wrexham, making 850gns when it sold to the National Trust, Charlecote, Warwick.
Ram lambs peaked at 800gns twice, including for the day's overall champion, Elmley Colin the Caterpillar, from Messrs Strong and Hendey, Pershore, which sold to Matthew Greenow, Hereford. At the same money for Messrs Harries, Gobaith flock, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, was Gobaith Wing Man, which sold to K. and R. Knowles, Clitheroe.
Messrs Strong and Hendey also took a 750gns bid to top the ewe lamb section, selling their fourth prize winner to G. P. Heaven, Gloucester.
Averages: 4 shearling rams, £931.87; 7 ram lambs, £552; 3 flock ewes, £294; 11 shearling ewes, £501.14; 34 ewe lambs, £248.29.

Texel females to €3,700 online
Pedigree Texel females sold to a €3,700 high in the Leading Ladies online sale. Sale leader was Kilduff Haylie, a shearling gimmer from Robert Dunne, Cavan. Home-bred by the 30,000gns Hilltop Golden Eye, out of a 10,000gns Loosebeare Chief ewe, the buyers were Messrs Haverty, Dunmore, Co Galway.
Another shearling gimmer from the same home, Kilduff Hanna, made €3,100. Also by Golden Eye, out of a Kilduff ewe, this one sold to Messrs Donohoe, Crosserlough, Co Cavan.
A €3,000 bid secured Oberstown Harmony, a shearling gimmer from Barry Farrell, Co Meath. This one again by Golden Eye, out of a Teiglum ewe, sold to Messrs Connelly, Tuam, Co Galway.
Also making €3,000 was Oberstown Isla, a ewe lamb from the same home. This one by Drumderg Haribo, out of a Knock ewe, sold to Messrs Mcilwaine, Newtownstewart, Co Tyrone.
